We know for a fact that the quality of air we breathe is degrading. Mostly, people think that indoor air is better as compared to outdoor air because basically, we do not have tons of cars inside our homes, right? Sadly, this may not be always true. Yes, thousands of pollutants are present outside but there are studies that show that indoor air has higher concentration of gases than outdoor air mainly because of inadequate ventilation and humidity.

Here are some basic apartment hacks to make your indoor air quality better -

1. Encourage Smokers to Light Up Outside
TP_201709_FEATURE_STORY_02.jpg
We all know that cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals that are harmful to the body. If that is the case, why was it even invented? Anyway, unconsciously for smokers, the smell of cigarette fumes sticks to their shirts, cushions and even the furniture. If combined with other chemicals floating in your indoor air, oh boy, that would be a disaster.

As all residential houses are designed with an open spaced area, be it balcony or terraces, why not encourage them to utilize the place and light up outside? Although the main reason for open spaced area is for fire exit escape, interior designers make this cosy for simple chit chats. This way they get to enjoy their cigarette without making non-smokers uncomfortable. Encourage them to utilize the place.

2. Tender a Plant

Not only that plants add life to your living rooms, there are studies that show plants absorb harmful chemicals suspended in the air. In return, they give us oxygen relevant to our breathing. Aren’t they noble? Put them at the centre of the table or right beside your favourite arm chair. That would be great for terraces and balcony as well. But you may want to drain stagnant water from the pot every day or else it would be a haven for baby mosquitoes. Now visit your nearest botanical gardens and shop for some air purifying plants!

3. Keep Your House Clean and Tidy

Well, this is obvious. You would want to keep your house clean. Do you think the air inside your home is of top quality if you forgot to take your garbage out for a week? Keep your dangerous household chemicals properly labelled in your stock room. This would make your home free from any untoward incident if you have small children living with you.

You would want to regularly vacuum the floor and replace the sheets of your bed and cushion. Don’t forget to tickle your cabinetry and furniture regularly to wake up those lazy dusts and bugs. Tell them they are not welcome and you rule in your home!

4. Or, Redecorate your Home

Although it may not be practical for some, this idea is one good investment. Choose hard floor instead of carpets. Carpets, if not cleaned or vacuumed regularly would be a breeding ground for dust mites. You wouldn’t want these things living with you. You may opt for blinds instead of satin or silk curtains. For those who would want to keep their curtains, it is better to wash them regularly.

As to furniture, metal chairs or leather would be better compared to furry, cotton sofas. Glass tables instead of woods would be preferable as thinners from wooded tables emit formaldehyde which you wouldn’t want to inhale.

5. Use Air Purifier

Basically, air purifiers remove common indoor allergens in the air like dusts, mould and odour. On the other hand, air purifiers produce ozone and ions which is not good for the overall quality of the air. Who cares? We are already doomed anyway, right?

As a general rule, always put your air purifier where you spend most of your time at home, whether it is on the living room or your own room. The second-best place is to put it near the source of air pollutants. Obviously, that is the kitchen, because, ahm, do I really have to explain it?

6. Make sure the vent for cooking appliances functions

Of course, or else you will be loading your air purifier with tons of works to do! Why would you pollute the air you just made clean? Check whether your vent is functioning well before you hit the wok. If not, better open your window for ventilation, turn on the fan and allow the air to circulate freely in and out. Sometimes, it is good to replace your indoor air with the natural existing one that is the outdoor air.

7. Keep the windows closed especially at night

You may unconsciously know it. But windows are part of the anatomy of the house where you really have to invest. Apparently, air pollution is worse at night and early morning. This is true especially for highly urbanized cities. Although it is teasing to just leave the windows open and feel the cold night breeze while you slowly fall asleep, or while you enjoy your morning coffee, this isn’t fun at all. Senselessly and slowly, you are inhaling particles that are bad for your body. So better close the window and enjoy a healthier life.

This may not state all the things you should do to improve the air quality in your house but it should give you tips. Better is he who knows a simple hack than he who knows nothing at all.
